About this session:

Minnesota’s antiquated correctional facilities are in dire need of attention. St. Cloud Reformatory opened in 1889. Built in 1914, Stillwater is the state's largest close-security institution. The design and dilapidated state of both facilities make them obsolete, a reality that became clear in the summer of 2023 when over 100 inmates took part in a tense protest over conditions in Stillwater. After decades of inaction on this issue, this panel examines the viability of these two prisons and explores the future of the incarceration infrastructure in Minnesota.

Panelists:

Margaret Zadra, Ombudsperson for Corrections, State of Minnesota

Sgt. Jack Sofie, Corrections Officer, Minnesota Department of Corrections

Chris Cabrera, Author and Artist

Moderator: Will Cooley, PhD, Metro State, Policy Director, MNJRC
